We rarely charge entry here at ‘Round Midnight. I wish I could say it was for some deep-seated ethical reason – ‘music for all’ and all that. The truth is that in these unnerving economic times, most people object to paying even a small amount to come into a music venue no matter how good that night’s entertainment happens to be. Moreover, a great many of those that would, feel (rightly) entitled to stay in all night having only bought one drink (or often none at all).
There’s a saying in the bar trade that a new customer will always spend more than one that’s been in for a couple of hours which is why we would much rather open our doors and allow our customers to come and go as they please without feeling obliged to stay for as long as possible because they’ve paid to get in.
Every once-in-a-while we put on one-off shows with some big name acts. Ian Seigal, Michael Manring, Adrian Legg to name a few and in order not only to cover costs but to ensure a quiet, listening and respectful audience, we charge entry.
Tickets for these events usually go on sale at least two months beforehand yet the majority of people will wait until the last week before trying to purchase them and will inevitably find that there are none left.
For example, for Ian Seigal’s show here recently, at least twice as many people e-mailed and called the bar in the week leading up to the night as those that secured their tickets early and were able to attend.
What’s the answer? Buy yer tickets early! Problem solved. Our next big night is New Year’s Eve. The tremendous Jimmy C & The Blues Dragons will be playing all night long, we will provide a large selection of nibbles all night and a free glass of bubbly at midnight. If the last few NYEs are anything to go by, anyone trying to get in on the night without having bought a ticket will be sorely disappointed!
That’s told ya!
